Teaching was interesting! Despite the extreme friendliness of everyone, including the students, classes were very formal. Everyone is keen to learn - there is a total absence of the sort of discipline problems that exist in Australian or British schools. It was however very hard to get students to respond. They tended to write down anything I wrote on the board (there are few if any text books), then they would wait, and then write down the answer when that went up on the board. This is good practice for handwriting, but is less effective for their maths. It also made it very hard to pitch lessons and explanations at the appropriate level. The gradual "loosening up" of the class atmosphere is probably best illustrated by this and the next two images. This one was taken very early on.
