This "Practical Skills" project particular appeals to me, because there is a desperate shortage of jobs and employment. Too much of what entrepreneurial spirit there is comes from outside the country (and this is declining), and there is a feeling that in many ways PNG has moved steadily backwards since independence. I had a personal experience of this when first flying into Popondetta (the airstrip by moonlight at dawn, with Mt Lamington in the backgroud, is shown below). We left Port Moresby, flew over the Owen Stanley range, but then found Popondetta under heavy cloud (or, more precisely, didn't find it). Until recently, there was a navigational beacon at Popondetta serviced from Australia, and landing in cloud was possible. More recently responsibility for maintaining these beacons has been taken over by the PNG government. The beacon went wrong about three months ago, has not been repaired, so landing in cloud is no longer possible. The pilots do not believe that the beacon will ever be repaired. So we had to turn back, and try again the next day.
