The trip was arranged by the Anglican Board of Mission, who gave invaluable advice and set up the initial contacts.  Their web site is www.abmission.org

The school to which I was sent was the Martyrs' Memorial School, about 35 km by very bumpy road from Popondetta, the provincial capital and pretty much the only town in Oro Province.  Oro Province is north-east of Port Moresby, and is where the Japanese landed in World War 2.  There is no road connection with Port Moresby, though it is possible to walk across the Owen Stanley range that separates the north and south coasts via the notorious Kokoda Trail.

The usual method of travel into town was in the school truck, which was generally so full that, as in this photo, it was hard to actually see the truck!
