It is some years since Greygum and Nelson Thomson Learning co-operated to jointly publish the PM Story Books Software.

Since then the PM Story Books Software packages have gone on to become the most widely used educational software in Australian schools in the field of early reading.

Now Nelson Thomson Learning and Greygum are once again co-operating, this time to produce software for the recently published PM Maths series of textbooks.

New PM books from Nelson
Published in late 2002 and early 2003, the PM Maths series consists of 48 books in four stages: A, B, C and D. These books fulfil two main purposes. On the one hand, they are early reading books, conforming to the established high standard of all the PM series, and at carefully chosen reading levels. The twelve books in series A, for example, are equivalent to the PM Red Story Books in their reading level.

But the books deal with both literacy and numeracy. The other aspect of the series is that the books explore mathematical topics and skills that are appropriate to the reading age of each book. The first few books, for example, introduce the first numbers—1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Later books in series A deal with simple patterns, counting, shape and size, symmetry, and simple comparisons. Later books, with a higher reading level, deal with correspondingly more advanced mathematical topics.

Learn to read ...
Like the books, the software has two main objectives.

The first is to assist with early reading. The software allows students to read the books on screen, to see each page, listen to the words being read, and watch each word highlighted as it is read, as with the PM Story Books Software. This helps children associate the sound of the word with its meaning and its printed appearance — which is essentially what reading is all about.

... and learn maths, too!
The software also provides a large range of questions and activities based on the mathematical content of a given book. As we know from the Maths Circus series, hands-on practical puzzles on a computer are an ideal way to involve children and help them learn, understand and enjoy mathematics.
